I was just sitting in the Chiropractor’s office reading a National Geographic article about the flies and mosquitoes in Upper Michigan, and it occured to me that a good premise for an apocolyptic SF story would be all of the insects dying off for one reason or another. The environment would go to hell real quick, most people wouldn’t notice it at first, there would be very little that could be done, and it would be such a little but key part of our environment that it would be an ironic twist of fate to be killed of the lack of insects.
Kind of like the possible chaos from such a simple little bug as Y2K problems - not really siginifcant by itself, but so pervasive in our systems that it takes years to discover/fix/test all of them, and in systems on which we have grown so dependant, that in some ways it is very similar.
